The goal of the Communication faculty is to help our students understand the critical role of communication in the diverse contexts of their lives. Students with a minor in Communication acquire the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive change in the world. Communication minors are able to live, work, and communicate effectively, creatively, responsibly, and ethically in personal relationships, civic life, the workforce, and graduate school.

A 2018 survey by the Association of American Colleges and Universities found that while hiring managers and top executives believe many college grads have the skills for entry-level jobs, only 25-34% (respectively) believe these students have the skills needed for promotion, including skills in communication, team work, and problem solving.

The Department of Communication offers Tier I, Tier II, and Diversity & Inclusion General Education Requirement (GER) courses and an academic Minor. All courses are designed to assist students to:

  • Develop skills employers are looking for when hiring and promoting employees
  • Be able to work in groups/teams more effectively
  • Understand relationships with family, friends, and co-workers
  • Present themselves and their ideas more convincingly
