Lecture: 'Horse Dancing Over the Fences of Tradition: Korea, You Tube and the Marketing of Culture in the 21st Century' with Dr. Jocelyn Clark Jan. 18

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Dr. Jocelyn Clark of Pai Chai University in South KoreaFriday, Jan. 18, Noon-1 p.m.
Anchorage Hilton Hotel

Heard of Gangnam style? Dr. Jocelyn Clark will discuss Korean national branding and what Psy's "Gangham" has to do with it.

Join the for an engaging lecture on how the so-called "Korean Wave" of the last decade or so, crowned by the viral success of Psy's "Gangnam" horse dance in 2012, has had the Korean government thinking hard about how to cash in on the movement, both in terms of money, but also in terms of Joseph Nye's idea of "soft power." Dr. Jocelyn Clark, a Juneau-native and professor of International Studies at Pai Chai University in South Korea, will explore these issues of national branding in Korea and why this might be of interest to Alaska.
