Biography

Christopher Song is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at the University of Alaska, Anchorage where he will coordinate the music education program, conduct the 老澳门六合彩开奖记录 Wind Ensemble, direct the 老澳门六合彩开奖记录 Pep Band, and teach applied woodwind lessons.


Song earned his Ph.D. in music education at Louisiana State University with a minor focus in Curriculum Studies. His responsibilities at LSU included instructing undergraduate coursework and assisting with the Translational Research in Music Group (TRMG). Song鈥檚 dissertation is titled, 鈥淧reserving the Historic and Cultural Music of Louisiana Through School Music: An Ethnographic Case Study.鈥 His work was an examination of a school community鈥檚 implementation of traditional Louisiana music into school curriculum. His primary professors were Ann Marie Stanley, Jason Bowers, and David Saccardi. Song assisted with the LSU Golden Band From Tigerland and Bengal Brass ensembles. He earned his Master鈥檚 in music education from the University of Michigan and his Bachelor鈥檚 in music education from the University of Houston.


Song has taught music and band in EC-12 levels in Baton Rouge, LA and Houston, TX areas. He spent most of his teaching career at Baines Middle School located in Missouri City, TX as a band director. His primary responsibilities included conducting the Symphonic Band, Jazz ensemble, and teaching beginner woodwind classes.


His research interests include culturally responsive pedagogy, music curriculum reform, and equity and inclusion in the music classroom. Most recently, Song co-authored a chapter on popular music pedagogy in the second edition of Musicianship-Focused Curriculum and Assessment edited by Colleen Conway. He has presented at conferences including the Asian American Pacific Islander Music Education Gathering, Minority Band Directors Association, and the Midwest Clinic.
