New Programs in Mathematics & Natural Sciences

It is an exciting time for the College of Arts and Sciences, especially for curriculum. As career fields and industry changes, the curriculum and education provided should similarly adapt and change. We have made efforts to refresh and invigorate the degrees, courses, and certificates we offer to our students, which includes a certificate in Fermentation Science and an Associate of Science degree.

Fermentation Science Certificate:

The Department of Biological Sciences has a new certificate in Fermentation Science. This is a 27 credit certificate designed to prepare students for careers in the commercial production of fermented foods and beverages, including the craft brewing industry. It will be offered from the Anchorage campus starting in Fall 2024 and includes courses in biology and chemistry, brewing and fermentation science, beverage management and the microbiology of fermented foods and beverages. The certificate also includes a summer internship with a commercial producer of fermented foods or beverages (internship providers will be located both in Anchorage and across the state). Dr. Khrys Duddleston (Professor and Assistant Dean, Biological Sciences) worked closely with Ted Rosenzweig (Turnagain Brewing) and Lee Ellis (Midnight Sun and President of the Brewers Guild of Alaska) over the last two years to develop the curriculum. Associate of Science:

We now have an Associate of Science (AS) degree housed within the College of Arts and Sciences that is open to all 老澳门六合彩开奖记录 students, including students at our community campuses.  Complementary to the existing Associate of Arts (AA) degree, this new AS Degree provides another option for students who are interested in the sciences.  The AS degree provides a solid foundation in STEM fields, including clinical sciences. Additionally, students can easily apply their AS coursework and credits and continue to a BS degree, if they choose. To facilitate the use of this new degree we are developing advising tracks to assist students in selecting appropriate courses depending on their interests. Some of our advising tracks include those developed with an eye toward BS degrees in the College of Health in Dental Hygiene, Dietetics, Medical Laboratory Science and Nursing. Students interested in these majors, can earn their AS degree while completing their prerequisites for these programs.
